香港海洋生物-珊瑚 Hong Kong marine life - 無脊椎動物 Invertebrates

Photos of marine invertebrates in Hong Kong waters.  These are fascinating and in many cases really beautiful animals.  In Hong Kong they are not fuly protected except in two very small areas where all extraction is prohibited.

香港海洋生物-珊瑚 Hong Kong marine life - 珊瑚 Coral

Photos illustrating some of Hong Kong's corals.  Hong Kong's few remaining areas of coral reef are small and under immense pressure.  Though 80 different types of hard coral have been found here, coral coverage is very low in most areas of Hong Kong's waters.

Fish (25)

Photos of a few of Hong Kong's marine fish species.  Hong Kong's waters are an important spawning ground for fish in the South China area and in the past has had a diverse fish population.  The reality is that the population is dominated by a small number of non commercial species and by small fish. Here we highlight some of the beauty of the fish life in Hong Kong to show what might be possible.

Hong Kong marine parks - 海下灣海岸公園 Hoi Ha Wan Marine Park

Photos of Hong Kong's most accessible marine park.  Above water is is serene and beautiful, underwater there is potential, but at the moment the ecology is not diverse and has been decimated by continuing fishing effort.

Hong Kong marine parks - 印洲塘 Yan Chau Tong

Photo's of Yan Chau Tong Marine Park, this park is located in the far North East of mainland Hong Kong.  Adjacent to the Pat Sin Leng country park, this marine park boasts a variety of habitats including reefs, mangroves and rare marine grasses. Unfortunately the park area is subject to major pressures, over and illegal fishing, silt, red tide and periodic hypoxia (lack of oxygen)

Our concerns - Pollution

Photos illustrating marine pollution issues in Hong Kong waters.

Our concerns - Damaging seafood consumption

Here we place a few photos to illustrate some of the issues regarding unsustainable consumption habits.

Unfortunately the habits of the Hong Kong consumer are playing a part is destroying the marine environment.  Short term thinking by restauranteurs and consumers is resulting in unsustainable consumption habits that is devasting not only the Hong Kong marine environment but also regional and global reefs and fish stocks..

Our concerns - Decimated marine ecology
Photo's to show the reality of Hong Kong's decimated marine ecology
Our concerns - Unsustainable fishing

Hong Kong's waters are overfished and subject to damaging fishing techniques such as trawling (both bottom and mid water) and gill netting.  The amount of fishing here has to be reduced to ensure the survival of marine eco systems and of the fishing community.
